Hadley. N.Y., and settled in Vaterbury
As a young man he began his business'
career in the emerging utilities industry.
Ultimately he would have an interest in
many electric, gas, telephone and trolley
companies in Connecticut, New Jersey
and New York.
A.M. Young and his wife Ellen
Shepardson purchased property in 1893
on the Pine Orchard shore at Cresecent
Bluff and built a summer home which
they called "The Anchorage." The
estate was built by conrractor Richard
Bradley of Branford and contained 2l
tooms, l0 baths, l0 fireplaces and had a

were beautifully landscaped and with
their-four daughters, thi Youngs enjoyed many summers at the pine Or-

chard shore.
Through his varied interests A.M.
Young made many contributions to the
development of the community. He
owned the company which brought electric, water and rrolley service to Branford. At Pine Orchard he built seawalls,
maintained Young's Pond and built the
clubhouse for the use of Pine Orchard's
summer residents. Originally standing on
the grounds of the golf course, the
clubhouse was moved to its present loca-

The Youngs made Pine Orchard their
year-round home in 1899. A.M. Young
died in lgll and after the death of Mrs.
Young in 1938, the home was maintained by members of the family. "The Anchorage" was rorn down in 1948 and the
property absorbed by adjacent land
owners.

Yachting's proved popular
for many summer seasons
Yachting in Branford
Branford is ideally located on the
river to provide many forms of summer
recreation. During the colonial period
the river was used for commercial
shipping and Branford products were
exported along the easrern seaboard and
as far south as the'lVest Indies. It was
not until the latter part of the lgth
century that the Branford River was
used for pleasure boating.
At the turn of the cenrury Branford
waters were very popular for sailboats of
all sizes and annual regatras were held at
the Thimble Islands. The Pine Orchard
Clubwas founded in 1901 and moved
to its present location in 19l6 to

provide mooring for its members'
yachts. Some of the finest boats in the
area were moored at the club. The
Johnson family of Short Beach and the
Edwin Baldwin family of Branford were

early pioneers in the building of naptha
launches and motorized boats soon
became as popular as sailboats.
The Branford Yacht Club was

founded in 1909 and after reorganizing
in 1927 moved to the "Dock Housen at
Branford Point. In 1938 the club had
223 members and moored more than
100 boats. The clubhouse sustained
considerable damage during the'38
hurricane and all but one boat was
saved. The Branford Yacht Club
purchased land and moved to Goodsell
Point in 1946 where it is still in
operation.
Today hundreds of pleasure boats are
moored at many locations along the
Branford River at both public and
private docks. Branford is known as one
of the yachtsman's finest ports for
facilities on Long Island Sound.

Waiting Station

was
one of several stores to

open along the trolley
route.
These "waiting stations" sold goods to
passengers and sumJane Bouley
mer residents such as
soda, ice cream, candy, postcards, newspapers, groceries and beach accessories. Often passengers
boarded or disembarked from the trolley at the
store, and local boys offered to carry the passengers' luggage to the nearest summer hotel for a
dime. People took the trolley to the waiting stations
to obtain an ice cream cone.
William Knowles established the Short Beach
Waiting Station about 1900 at the corner of the present day Shore Drive and Taylor Place. Shore Drive
at that time was called Main Street. Walter Hill ran
the Waiting Station for a number of years followed
by Merritt E. Taylor who moved from Kensington
to Short Beach in 1919. There was an apartment on
the second floor where the family lived.
Subsequent owners were the VerWholt and
Brennan families.
Harry Tucker ran tha Waiting Station from 1934
until 1947 and moved the store one building west to
130 Shore Drive. The store featured a luncheon

down in 1963 to make way for UnionTrust Banlc

The new Tenney home was designed by a Mr.
Allen of New Haven and built by Ray and William
Company of thdsahe city. The home, patterned after
a Southem mansion, was considered one of the finest
in the areas. Dr. Tenney maintained his office in the
house and was one of the first people in Branford to
own an automobile and to build a garage to
accommodate the vehicle. He continued to practice
medicine until his death in L929.
l-aura Hammer Tenney was noted for the lovely
gardens on the estate and her care of animals. She was
a favorite among the children who were always
offered a cookie when they passed by. Mrs. Tenney
died in 1962 at the age of 98 and is buried at Center
Cemetery.
The Tenney mansion was sold in 1963 for $90,000
to private investors. Despite public opposition, the
home was torn down and a bank was built on the site,
which remains

today.

What's in a street name? Some interesting history
A study of the origin
and names of the streets in

Branford provides an
interesting look at the
history of the town. The
first streets settled by the
colonists

in

1644 were the

present day Main Street
and Montowese Street both

called in the

records
"Towne Street." There was

also a small path off of
Montowese Street called
"Pig Lane" which is long

since gone. Of course the
period
the turn of the century
until
roads during that

Tree Lane, Forest Street, Hemlock Road and Laurel
Street.

An interesting street name is Linden Avenue which
is named for a tree, not a person. During the summer
resort period several streets and cottages along the
shore were named "Linden."
In 1954 the United States Postal Service mandated
that no town shall have the same street names and
many changes in Branford took place. Main Street in
Short Beach became Shore Drive, Main Street in
Stony Creek became Thimble Islands Road, Bradley
Street became Court Street and so on. The name
changes created much confusion and today we still

have many similar street names - Bradley Street and
Avenue, Wilford Avenue and Road, Linden Avenue

and Linden Point Road, Summer Island Road and
Extension, East, South, North, and West Main Streets.
There is an Oak Street, Oakdale Road, Oakdale Place,
Oakgate Drive, Oak Hollow Road and Oak Ridge
Road. Perhaps the most confusing are Old Pawson
Road, Pawson Landing Road, Pawson Park Road and
Pawson Trail Road.

were little more than unpaved paths.
The majority of streets in Branford are named for a
family or person. Many still retain the names of the

early English settlers - Averill Place, Baldwin Drive,

Blackstone Avenue, Barker Place, Bartholomew
Road, Beach Place, Bradley Avenue, Goodsell Point
Road, Gould Lane, Harrison Avenue, Hoadley Road,
Howd Avenue, Johnson Point Road, Lanphier Road,
Linsley Road, Maltby Street, Monroe Street, Palmer
Road, Plant Road, Rogers Street, Russell Street,
Sheldon Road, Taintor Drive and $ler Street.
Others are named for more recent residents such as
Aceto Street, Bowhay Hill, Burban Drive, Clancy
Road, Damberg Place, Etzel Road, Hammer Place,
Hamre Lane, Lavassa Terrace or Piscitello Drive, to

name a few.

A few roads in Branford are named for the town's
earliest Indian settlers - Montowese Street, Pawson
Park Road, Sachem Road, Sagamore Cove Road,
Sowheag Path and Squaw Brook Road. Some believe
that Yowago Avenue is also an Indian name but it was
named for the gentlemen, Young, Warner and Goss,
who were involved in the development of Pine
Orchard.

There are many streets in Branford named for
objectis in nature particularly trees. We have Maple
Street. Elm $'"eet. Ivy Street, Applewood Road.
Cedar Street( :stnut Street. Dogwood Court. Fir

Branford has many interesting street names. Iftis circa l9l0 view shows Main Street in Stony Creek.

Note the road is unpaved, 4 there are trolley tracks to the right. In 1954 the name was

Thinble lslonds Road. I
