The Brantbrd Lock Works, started by Thomas Kennedy is 1862, held many patents for lock and window hardware. Many BLW products are still being used in homes today and are prized among lock collectors. Thorvald Hammer (1825-1901) of the Malleable Iron Fittings Co. invented the tapping or threading machine which was used for pipe fittings. MIF built tapping machines and leased them to othercompanies. His son, Alfred Hammer(18581935) established the first chemical control and' research laboratory in the country at MIF in 1875. He vastly improved the use of iron during processing and shared his findings with others in the industry. Thomas Doolittle (18391921) owned Thimble Farms in Pine Orchard and was a pioneer in the telephone industry. He was the first vice president of AI&T and designed the first telephone switchboard ever manufactured. He also adapted the use of hard Jane Peterson Bouley drawn copper wire for underground cable. The first transcontinental telephone call was made in 1915 from San Francisco to his home in Pine Orchard. Several local men were active in the early years of mowboat engines. Edwin Baldwin (188G1964) had a shop on the Indian Neck Avenue bridge and built boat engines. Earl Bradley (188G1964) had a garage on Bradley Street where he repaired automobiles and probably built Branford's first tow tmclc He was an avid boatman and with Claus Johnson built a 35 mph engine out of a Curtis airplane motor. Much to the delight ofthe local children, he created various motorized winter apparatus, such as a motorcycle with skis. skis he'buih in 1917. A btidge was built in t79t across the tiver to provide bettet eccess to lndian Neck. This bridge known as the "Lower Bridge" lnd laier Hobarts or Hubbard's Bridge crossed the river at what is todty Mofltowese Street. Not far from thc Montowese Street Bridge another bridqe was built across the river shottly after the Civil r00ar. Called the "Uppet Btidge" or sometimcs the [on! Bridge. it was madc with rooden stiles and part of the bridge coutd be opened'to allow boats through. In 188{ Edwin Baldwin of Bt*trford built e small commetcial building on top of the bridge. llere he had a machine shop where he invented and repaired motors for boats. One of the motors fell into the river and can still be found on the bottom. The ' Baldwins also iold hot dogs from the stand. ln 1896 the "Refteshment House cvet the rivet" was run by George Erickson where he sold cigars, soda and ice crerm. The Uppcr Bridge, norp known as the lndian Neck Avenue Bddge, had a numbet of ptoblems. The bridge was not well built and high tides and winds would wrsh or blow away sections of the btidge. ln 1899, 100 feet of railing was blown off duting a gale. A section of the bridge collapsed in 1900 and was tepaired. Fortunately no one was hurt during these incidences. The bridge was replactd in l9l8 by Mariani Construc-' t4t,000. There was an abundant supply of ice to be harvested at the Supply Pond anrl Ward's Pond at lr{ill Plain, the Bradley Pond in Cherry Hill and Altmannsberger's Pond in Short Beach, as well as from the Branfbrd River. The ice had to be a minimunr of 9 inches thick to halvest. It was cut and pulled out of the pond by horses up a ralnp to the ice Branford, and it harvested ice at the Supply Pond and Branford Rivcr. There was considerable debate as to location, some prefierred the site at tlre corner of Montowese and Main streets but there were traflic concerns. The Board of Education approved a site at the corner of South Main and Eades streets for the new school. Two houses located on rhe Eades Street site had to be removed. One was a colonial structure built about 1712 end known as the Martin Page or Samuel Pond House but owned by the Beach fanrily for many years. Isaac P. Beach sold rlre land t<l the town for the nerv school and sold his house to Sam Criswold. Griswold paid $37 to Oscar Kelsey of Stony Creek to move the house down the street and had the dwelling convertcd into a funeral home. '[-oday this building is the Curris Funeral Home at 69 South Main St. The other house was a Greek Revivd structure owned by David Baldwin who had sold his farm on Route 139 in l9l2 and moved uptown. Tlris house was purchased by \Tilliam R. Foote, a local real estate agent and he proceeded to move the house to a lot on Vilford Avenue. Apparently Foote had not findized the purchase of the Vilford Avenue lot and the house remained half way onto the street for several days blocking the sidewdk. Unable to make the \7ilford Avenue agreement \Tilliam Foote moved the house to a lot he owned on Eades Street. Today this house still remains at 20 Eades Street opposite the school. The rear porrion of the Bddwin Housewas removed to the corner of Hopson Avenue and Prospect Strect and converted into a.single family dwelling. Branford's third high schoolwas dedicated Aug.24, 1929 on rhe F.ades Street site and today is known as Sliney School. One of the many old- lH 'ff '?it:i Branford was operated by i Chet Prann. l,;;ffi li ll2 in 1925. Only a few Block was destroyed by fire. Customers entering Prann's store were greeted by the stout gentlemen singing songs, such as "Can She Bake a Cherry Pie" or "The Horse Marines." Customers were enticed b5, a free nibble of the huge rounds of cheese, which stood in back of the big, red coffee grinder. Brother Fred Prann filled the pastry case with fresh bread and other baked goods. There were barrels of molasses, vinegar, pickles and apples. Penny candy was a popular item for the youth of all ages. The immense ice box was filled twice a day by the local iceman and was filled with butter, lard, cream and milk. The news of the day was exchanged and the local sports scene was discussed. Chester Prann was an avid si.rpporter of all Branford sports building ar Montowese St. years later the Hosley and sponsored many teams. Chet and Alice Prann raised their four sons in Branford and all of them had successful careers in engineeering after graduating from Yale. The aircraft was named for Graf Ferninand von Zeppelin and over the next l0 years I 18 zeppelins were manufactured. The "Graf Zeppelin" had 650 flights, made 144 trans-Atlantic crossings, logged one million miles, carried 18,000 passengers and millions of pieces of mail. The trip across the Atlantic took only two days and could cover 6,000 miles nonstop. The successor to the "Graf' was the "Luftshiff Zeppelin;" better known as the "Hindenburg." It made 10 successful trips to the United States during its first year of operation in 1936. The Hindenburg was the largest aircraft ever 811 feet long and built 135 feet wide. It was much like a luxury cruise ship JanetrouteY with.its sleeping quarters, state rooms, dance hall and rooms. Roundtrip tickets cost $700. dining were seen The zeppelins severai times passing their way to New York. The Graf over Branford on passed overtown on Aug. 19, 1936 and Zeppelin again in 1937. The school children were let out of class to see it go by. On that last fateful trip, the Hindenburg passed over Branford on May 6, 1937. The Hindenburg left Europe on Tuesday, May 4, 1937 and took a course to Boston, flying along the Connecticut shoreline and over Manhattan at 3 p.m. on May 6 where hundreds lined the rooftops to see it pass. However, thunderstorms delayed the landing until about 7 p.m. During the landing a fire broke out at7,,21p.m. and 34 seconds later an explosion rocked the nearby countryside. A total of 29 passengers were killed, but 36 survived by jumping from the aircraft. Hayes, the 19th President of the United State, paid a visit to the New in June President Hayes' great-grandfather, Ezekiel Hayes, Haven area l 880. lived in Branford in the mid-18th century. Ezekiel's first wife, Rebecca Russell, was the daughter of John Russell and Trowbridge granddaughter Sarah and of the Rev. Samuel Russell. Jane Bouley Ezekiel Hayes worked as a blacksmith and a toolmaker making scythes, axes and cowbells. In 1749 Ezekiel Hayes made bricks on his property and constructed a large building on Main Street later known as the Totoket Hotel. It was such an imposing structure that the local people called it "Hayes Follie." The building burned in 1970 and is now the site of the Branford Book and Card Shoppe. President Hayes' arrived in New Hiven by train with his wife and son and stayed with his "kinfolk" Thomas and Rutherford Trowbridge. In New Haven he attended Yale Law School Commencement, watched the Yale-Harvard baseball game and was the guest of honor at a grand reception. On June 28th they took a carriage to Branford where they visited Center Cemetery and then the Trowbridge cottage in Indian Neck. The Trowbridge cottage at 93 Linden Ave. was built in 1871 and is attributed to architect Henry Austin of New Haven. It later served as the annex to the Montowese House and today remains a fine example of Victorian architecture. The site now known as Hammer Field remained a meadow well into this century. By 1910 a dirt path appropriately named, Meadow Street, ran along this area and was lined with companies that utilized the railroad for transportation. Among those were the Malleable Iron Fittings Company (MIF), the Atlantic Wire and the S.V. Osborn Company. The busy Branford train station was Jane Bouley on the west-end of Meadow Street toward Kirkham Street. Workers from Branford Center would cut across the meadow on their way to work at the MIF and jump across the creek that ran along Hopson Avenue. At high tide they had to take the long way around. Some farming was done on the east side of the land toward the present Community House. The area was also used as a dump. A building on the edge of the meadow and seen in the photograph was the practice hall for the Branford Band. In 1915, the MIF began using the meadow to dispose of sand and debris from its molding operations. After the meadow was filled in, the top was covered with two feet of loam and the site was made into a much-needed Photo courtesy of Branford Historical Society. Branford Point with iti corrages and summer hotel attracted many vacitioners. The chapel was built in lgao by Isaac Brown who was the sexton for 3l years of Grace Episcopal Church in New York City. Brown was also'e yearly guest at the Branford Point Hotel and had the church built to provide a place. 5,7,' of worship for thived dudng rcsofi peiod sailors and the summer population. 'Ihe chapel was constructed by Richard Bradley of Branford for Mr. Brown. It was a 25 by 40-foot srrucrure, wood with a slate roof andtould seat 100 people. Services were held every Sunday during the summer at 4 p.m. and ministers from the Branford Center churches or other guest pastors would preach. Rev. Arthur Chase who owned a cottage in what is now Parker Memorial Park frequently gave the sermon. The chapel was dedicated in August full name wes "Mission Chapel of Grace of the Parish of Trinitv Church." Only a week after the dedication the chapel's mentor Isaac Brown died. Services would continue every year until the summer resorr era begin to wane . The church was last opened i-n f qtq for a baptism. 1880 and its was no longer being uscd as a church. A new home was built on the site by Mr. \fladstrom using the original foundation and some of the building materials. The wood from a shed at the rcar of the property was used by thc boys of Trinity Church in Branford to make bird houses which they sold at the l92l Trinity Fair. The home is still occupied to this day by mcmbers of the \fladstrom family. In 1925 thc building was sold to Oscar NVadstrom. Leo DeOrsey of 2 Spring Rock Road in Pine Orchard. Glenn was the first man to orbit the earth on February 20, 1962 and was one of the most admired people in the world. During his visit here, John Glenn met with representatives of the Branford Review and signed autographs fbr the neighborhood children. After a three day visit of swimming and relaxing at the DeOrsey waterfront home, the Glenn family drove to Hyannis Port on Cape Cod to meet with Attorney General Robert Kennedy. C. Leo DeOrsey was a tax attomey and financial advisor who made his summer home in Branford. He represented Arthur Godfrey, Edward R. Murrow and the original seven astronauts. John Glenn made a subsequent visit to Branford in 1963 as did astronauts Alan Shepard, Scott Carpenter Postcard by Earl Colter of the Deorsey house at 2 Spring Rockc Road in Pine M" M" and Walter Shirra. Also visiting that surrrmer was Edward R. Munow, Information Agency. C. Leo DeOrsey died April 1965 at the age of 61. He Tomasso in North Branford.
