down in 1963 to make way for UnionTrust Banlc

The new Tenney home was designed by a Mr.
Allen of New Haven and built by Ray and William
Company of thdsahe city. The home, patterned after
a Southem mansion, was considered one of the finest
in the areas. Dr. Tenney maintained his office in the
house and was one of the first people in Branford to
own an automobile and to build a garage to
accommodate the vehicle. He continued to practice
medicine until his death in L929.
l-aura Hammer Tenney was noted for the lovely
gardens on the estate and her care of animals. She was
a favorite among the children who were always
offered a cookie when they passed by. Mrs. Tenney
died in 1962 at the age of 98 and is buried at Center
Cemetery.
The Tenney mansion was sold in 1963 for $90,000
to private investors. Despite public opposition, the
home was torn down and a bank was built on the site,
which remains

today.

What's in a street name? Some interesting history
A study of the origin
and names of the streets in

Branford provides an
interesting look at the
history of the town. The
first streets settled by the
colonists

in

1644 were the

present day Main Street
and Montowese Street both

called in the

records
"Towne Street." There was

also a small path off of
Montowese Street called
"Pig Lane" which is long

since gone. Of course the
period
the turn of the century
until
roads during that

Tree Lane, Forest Street, Hemlock Road and Laurel
Street.

An interesting street name is Linden Avenue which
is named for a tree, not a person. During the summer
resort period several streets and cottages along the
shore were named "Linden."
In 1954 the United States Postal Service mandated
that no town shall have the same street names and
many changes in Branford took place. Main Street in
Short Beach became Shore Drive, Main Street in
Stony Creek became Thimble Islands Road, Bradley
Street became Court Street and so on. The name
changes created much confusion and today we still

have many similar street names - Bradley Street and
Avenue, Wilford Avenue and Road, Linden Avenue

and Linden Point Road, Summer Island Road and
Extension, East, South, North, and West Main Streets.
There is an Oak Street, Oakdale Road, Oakdale Place,
Oakgate Drive, Oak Hollow Road and Oak Ridge
Road. Perhaps the most confusing are Old Pawson
Road, Pawson Landing Road, Pawson Park Road and
Pawson Trail Road.

were little more than unpaved paths.
The majority of streets in Branford are named for a
family or person. Many still retain the names of the

early English settlers - Averill Place, Baldwin Drive,

Blackstone Avenue, Barker Place, Bartholomew
Road, Beach Place, Bradley Avenue, Goodsell Point
Road, Gould Lane, Harrison Avenue, Hoadley Road,
Howd Avenue, Johnson Point Road, Lanphier Road,
Linsley Road, Maltby Street, Monroe Street, Palmer
Road, Plant Road, Rogers Street, Russell Street,
Sheldon Road, Taintor Drive and $ler Street.
Others are named for more recent residents such as
Aceto Street, Bowhay Hill, Burban Drive, Clancy
Road, Damberg Place, Etzel Road, Hammer Place,
Hamre Lane, Lavassa Terrace or Piscitello Drive, to

name a few.

A few roads in Branford are named for the town's
earliest Indian settlers - Montowese Street, Pawson
Park Road, Sachem Road, Sagamore Cove Road,
Sowheag Path and Squaw Brook Road. Some believe
that Yowago Avenue is also an Indian name but it was
named for the gentlemen, Young, Warner and Goss,
who were involved in the development of Pine
Orchard.

There are many streets in Branford named for
objectis in nature particularly trees. We have Maple
Street. Elm $'"eet. Ivy Street, Applewood Road.
Cedar Street( :stnut Street. Dogwood Court. Fir

From Jane P. Bouley's postcard collection

Branford has many interesting street names. Iftis circa l9l0 view shows Main Street in Stony Creek.

Note the road is unpaved, 4 there are trolley tracks to the right. In 1954 the name was
7'
Thinble lslonds Road. I

rvas a major producer of the berry in the late 180()s
until World War I.
Branford-grown strawberries rvere shipped by train
to rnarkets along the castern seaboard, especiaily to
Boston. ln a good growing year, 50,000 quarts of
berries were shipped tiom Brantbrd.
Many European immigrants were hired to pick the
berries and were paid2 cents a quart. Several
generations of tamilies
picked side by side in the

fields and about I,000
pickers were used in

Branford during the season.
The largest farm in
Branford to grow
strawberries was that of the
Plant family of Branford
Hills in the section then
known as Plantsville.

About 15 carloads of
berries consisting of 20,000

quarts were shipped to the
Boston market form the
Plant farm per year and

accounted for about one half of all the berries
produced in Branfbrd. The Plant farm was also the
largest producer of peaches in New England.
The Nichols farm on Cherry Hill was another
major grower of strawberries in Branford. Thirty of
their 120 acres were devoted to strawberries. The
Beach family grew strawberries as did Henry Averill
in Indian Neck and John Barron on his farm on East
Main Street. In 1869, the farmers organized the
Branfbrd Fruit Co. in order to consolidate pricing and
shipping from Branford. The company shipped 2,500
quarts of strawberries daily and were known as the
largest producer in the East. The last large shipment
ot strawberries iiom Brantbrd was made in 1916.
Aiter World War I. some of the farms were sold
and help became harder to find. A t'ew farmers still

famiiies and Irving Field.
The times were changing and Branford was
becoming less of a farming and more of a suburban
community. The Plant family orchard is now

Caldor's, the Nichols farm is apartments and stores,
Barron's farm is now the site of Branford High
School and Henry Averiil's tield is now the Indian
Neck School and Foote Park.
Perhaps rvhile you eat your strawberry shortcake
this June, you might pause to ret'lect on Brantbrd's
past contribution to the strawberry industry.

one of several stores to

route.
These "waiting stations" sold goods to
passengers and sumJane Bouley

soda, ice cream, candy, postcards, newspapers, groceries and beach accessories. Often passengers
boarded or disembarked from the trolley at the
store, and local boys offered to carry the passengers' luggage to the nearest summer hotei for a

to obtain an ice cream cone.
William Knowles established the Short Beach
Waiting Station about 1900 at the corner of the present day Shore Drive and Taylor Place. Shore Drive
at that time was called Main Street. Walter Hill ran
the Waiting Station for a number of years followed
by Merritt E. Taylor who moved from Kensington
to Short Beach in 1919. There was an apartment on
the second floor where the family lived.
Subsequent owners were the VerWholt and
Brennan families.
Harry Tucker ran thb Waiting Station from 1934
until 1947 and moved the store one building west to
130 Shore Drive. The store featured a luncheon

T'his past Fourth of July, trvo boats ran up on Dick
Rock approachirrg iligh and Governor's lslands in the
'Ihinrbles, A ntrmber of vessels throughotrt history
hnve had difficulty navigating Branford's waters.

'Ihe most fantous of Branford's shipwrecks rvas
that of the "Jenny l-ind," a 7O-foot schooner from Sag

llarhor that hit N{orris Rocks off Sumac Island in
Indian Neck on July 12, 1878.
The schooner sunk and
scattered its cargo of pine
boards into the Sound. The
crew abandoned ship and
were rescued by a passing
fishing boat. George

Averill laid claim to the
boat and hauled it to the
shore at the end of Linden
Avenue. The boat was
converted into a restaurant
known as the "Ark," which
served shoreline dinners

for many years.
A two-masted schooner
from New York, the
"Arnelia Wright," sprung a leak in November 1899
off the Branford Beacon and its cargo of bricks
deslined for New London soon soaked trp the water.
Capt. llallock and trvo crerv members rvere saved by
Jane Peterson Bouley

a passing fisherman, but the boat was never raised.
Tw'o months later the barge "Roger" turned upside
clorvn off the Branford Beacon, dumping 500 tons of
coal into the water. The barge drifted east and went
nshrrre at Race Point and was towed to New l-ondon.
Tlre Dec. l, 1900 Branfurd Opinion reported that
Capt. Sinron Lake of Bridgeport in the "Argonaut"
rr ns or"rt looking for treasure in the Thimbles. The
harge "Gypsy Girl" filled with cooper ingots sank
several years before and the treasure had never been

I'orrrrd.

'fhcre rvas no [urther report of Capt. Lake's

indings. Brorvn. East and Wheaton Reefs southwest
of Outer lsland claimed a number of vessels at the
turn of the century. A bill was introduced in 1907 to
have the stflte erect a lighthouse because of the many
u,recks. The bitl did not pass becattse of the cost.

Another two-masted schooner, "Mary Buck,"
carrying 10,000 bricks enroute to Bridgeport was
wrecked March 1906 on Flat Rock off Johnson's
Point in a gale and blinding snowstorm. Capt. Dunn
and four crew members were saved.
"The Traveler" was a two-masted schooner built by
David Mack of Essex in 1869. During August 1907, it
was carrying 25 blocks of brownstone rveighing l0
tons each from Portland, Conn., to New York' T'he
schooner ran into Brown's Reef in heavy fog at night
and the hole in the side filled with water and the boat
sank. About l5 blocks and the crew were saved when
the wreck was abandoned. Some of the ship remained
in view until it disappeared in a gale on Sept. 23.

Stretri--onffouse: the jewel of the summir hotel era

Among the 19 summer hotels that once
dotted Branford's.shore
was the Sheldon House.
It stood on the bltff
between the Pine
Orchard Club and

Thimble Farms with a
magnificent view of the
Thimble Islands. Jerry
Sheltlon and his wife
Caty Lanphier of
Branford started the
hotel as a boarding

by their son, Truman,

1885. Truman's wife,
