Scandinavians immigrate to Branford
The Scandinavians were among the
many Europeans to immigrate to Branford
in the late l9th century and all four countries of Sweden, Nonvay, Finland and
Denmark were represented.
The first Scandinavian to come to
Branford was Thorvald Hammer, a
native of Denmark, who

in

1864 was

of the founders of the MIF

(Malleable Iron Fittings Company). The
family was associated with that company for three generations. Many
Scandinavian immigrants found
employment at the MIF and lived along
Indian Neck Avenue past the factory.
According to the 1880 census, there
were only a few Scandinavians in
Branford besides the Hammer family.
Alfred Lundquist, 33, his wife and daughter, all natives of Sweden, were listed as
residing in Stony Creek. He was a stone
cutter at the quarry. There were also five
young Swedish men working and boarding at the Kelsey Fish Factory in Short
Beach. Among them was Claus Johnson,
22,who would make Short Beach his permanent home. Many of Claus' descen-

dants live in Short Beach today.

Over the next

l0

years, more

Scandinavians would come to Branford.
In 1883 they began holding church services at the Congregational Church on the
Green. The Swedish Church was officially organized Jan.2,1888 with 40 charrer
members, and they made plans to build a
church on Hopson Avenue.
The church on Hopson Avenue was
built in 1889 by Benjamin Hosley, a local

contractor, but the building bumed in
1892 and had to be rebuilt. For a brief
period there was a Swedish church in
Stony Creek that was abandoned and the
fumiture was used at HopsonAvenue. The
Hopson Avenue church would serve the
needs of the parish until 1957 when they
moved to larger quarters on Thbor Drive.

Many descendants

Scandinavian families

of the early
still reside in

Branford today. Some, including the
children of this writer, represent the fifth
generation.

One of the interesting characters from
Branford's past was Gurdon Saltonstall,
the lOth govcrnor of Connecticut and an
ordained minister. He was born in 1666 in

Haverhill, I'tass., and kept a pcrmanent
residcnce in Ncw London. Alier lris rnarriage to Elizabeth Roscwcll of Branford,

The govcrnor's stay here rhough was not

Some of the farmers in East Haven kept

The body

between the towns of
Branford and East Haven

was known to

the

Quinnipiac Indians as
"Lonotonoquet" or Tear
of the Great Spirit. The
English settlers who
came in 1644 to Branford

called it the Great Lake
and after an iron works
was established on the
shore, the lake became
known as Furnace Pond.

After the iron

works
closed much of the land
Jane Bouley
along the lake was owned
hy William Rosewell of Branford, a wealthy ship
merchant. In 1700 his daughter Elizabeth married
Gurdon Saltonstall, who would become governor of
the Connecticut Colony.
Gurdon Saltonstall was born in 1666 in
Haverhill, Mass. and attended Harvard College. He
was ordained as a minister in New London in 1691
and soon gained a reputation as a dynamic preacher. After his marriage to Elizabeth Rosewell he
built a mansion along the shore of Furnace Pond,
which was one of the most elegant homes in the
area. The windows were adorned by tapestries
woven to depict a hunting scene and were imported
from England. The house had a massive oak stairway and brass doorknobs and fixtures.
Saltonstall made his permanent residence in New
London, but probably stayed in Branford for short
periods as business dictated. He was elected governor in 1708 and served until his death in 1724. He
was an influential and powerful politician and was
most famous during his term of office for the
Saybrook Platform, which provided for a consociation of the state's churches and was also the chief

proponent of bringing Yale College to New Haven
instead of Hartford.
At Saltonstall's death the mansion would pass to
his son, Rosewell Saltonstall of New London and
Hartford, and was managed for Rosewell by local
farmers. The last of the Saltonstalls to own the farm
was Rosewell Jr., who was a recluse and made the
Branford mansion his year-round home. Rosewell
Jr. died in 1788 in Branford at the age of 56 and is

buried at Center Cemetery.
The farm was sold by the Saltonstall family and
was occupied by several families, the last of whom
was William Hartley. The house burned to the
ground in 1909 but the foundation can still be seen
on the east side of the lake named in honor of
Governor Gurdon Saltonstall.

Among the beautiful Thimble
Islands in Stony Creek is the 7.6acre
Rogers Island. It was granted to John
Rogers in 1710 during Branford's 5th
land division and remained in the
Rogers
family until
1858. It is
the only

Thimble
Island to
retain the
name of its
original
grantee. The
isiand was
used as a

summer
retreat.
housed a fish
Jane Bouley
company and
stone was quarried on the island in the
late l9th cenrury.
Captain John Jay Phelps of
Hackensack, N.J., purchased the island
in 1902. Phelps was a noted yachtsman,
banker. industrialist, and graduated
from Yale in 1883. He hired an
architect named Taylor from New York
City to design a27-room Tudor
mansion on the island at a cost of

''

$50,000. Local contractor Oscar C.
Kelsey built the mansion by hauling
materials by oxen across the ice during
winter. During construction two of
Kelsey's employees quanelled over a
hammer and one was accidentally
drowned. Phelps also built a tennis
court, six-hole golf course, boat house,
250-foot pier, and planted 365 rose
bushes on the island. Phelps called his
island "Yonkomis" meaning "Big Crib"
and named his mansion Scotch Pine.
Locally the island became known as
Phelps island.
Captain Phelps died in Stony Creek

in 1948 at the age of 86 and the isiand
was purchased by Donald Macleod of
New York City. For the last 29 years it
has been owned by Paul Brown of New
York City. The late Art Paine of Stony
Creek was caretaker of the island for 23
years during which ttme it weathered

the '38 hurricane. After being on the
market for a number of years. it was
sold

in

1992 for $2.65 million.

The Tudor Mansion on Rogers Island in Stony Creek was built by John
Plrclps in 1904 andwas called "scotch Pine."

Fourth of July always eventful in Branford
BRANFORD

-

The

celebration of the nation's
independence has always
been a joyous occasion in

Branford, but not without
its pranks. At the turn of
the century the old Branford Battery marched on
the Green and sounded the

cannon. Young boys shot
off firecrackers often
scaring unsuspecting pedestrians until the noisemakers were banned from
Jane Peterson Bouley
use in 1939.
For many years the town
was awakened at the stroke of midnight on July 4 by
the tolling of the Trinity Church bell; yet the
constables, Billy McKee and Joseph Schenk, never
caught the perpetrator. Branford dentist Dr. Wilson
"Deke" Thompson had a key to the belfry of the
church and rang the bell every Sunday and admitted
later in life to be the one whom the constables longed
to catch.
He never rang the bell, however,

if a town resident
was gravely ill. On July 4, 1912, a group of boys
bumed down the old horse sheds which stood behind
the Town Hall and is now the site of the World War I
Cenotaph.

Early this century the shoreline cottages were
decorated for the holiday with flags and incandescent
lights.
In 1896, 1,000 people came to the Driving Park on
East Main Street to hear a band concert followed by a

fireworks display.
The longest continuous running celebration is the
annual July 4 parade at Pine Orchard, now in its 77th
vear.

Following the parade, everyone was invited by the

Branford's origin reflects Indian roots
BRANFORD - The first settlers of New Haven
negotiated the purchase of a tract of land from the
Mattabesech Indians in December 1638 which
included the territory of "Totokett" later called
Branford. The Totoket Indians who lived here
retained for their own use
the peninsula known as
Indian Neck but eventuallY
sold all of their land to the

white settlers. There was
an attempt to settle
Branford by the English in
1640. The plantation of
Totokett was granted to Mr.
Samuel Eaton of New
Haven; however, he went
to England and did not
return. Before the English
came it is possible that the
Jane Peterson Boule)'
Dutch set up a trading Post
at the mouth of the
Branford River and the name Dutch Wharf remains
today.

In

1643 New Haven granted to Mr. William

Swayne and others of Wethersfield the plantation of
Totokett whose boundaries were the Stony River and

Great Pond (Lake Saltonstall) north to the
Wallingford line (including the present day North
Branford and Northford). Totokett was bounded by
Long Island Sound on the south and the Guilford line
to the east. The Wethersfield settlers came in the
Spring of l6M and were joined by an equal number
from New Haven. The Rev. John Sherman was the
first minister and a meeting house was built in what is
now Center Cemetery. Eventually the plantation
known as Totokett or Totoket became Branford.
According to tradition, Branford is named for
Brentford, England; however, the connection of the
early settlers to the English town is lacking. There is
no exact date in the records in which the name change
took place.

moved to the rear of the Congregational Church in 1857 to mnke way for the Town Hall and was

Branford, including the

families of Baldwin,
Barker, Bartholomew,
Beach, Frisbie, Linsley,

Palmer and

Tyler.
Members of these families

lived at Mill Plain for
nearly 200 years.
In 1799 a one-room
Jane Bouley
schoolhouse was built by
the pond for the education
of the children from that area of Branford. The Mill

Plain School was known as an upgraded school,

meaning more than one grade was taught in a room,
in ihis case grades I through.6. In the early part of
this century, the average enrollment was 25 students
and teachers only taught at the school a few years,
using it as a stepping stone to a teaching position in
Branford Center. No doubt it was a difficult assignment teaching six grades in one room to children
ranging in age from 5 to 12.
Little is said in the town records about the school
except an occasional comment by the school visitor.
The 1914 town report mentions that much improvement is needed at the Mill Plain and Damascus
Schools where "the proximity and conspicuousness
of the toilets suggest the lingering influence of rusric simplicity." In i919 it is reported that Mill plain
and other small schools still had ancient double seats
and inadequate lighting and blackboards. The
records also name the teachers and their salaries. In
1883 the Mill Plain schoolteacher was Edna Hoadley
who was paid $225 a year and by 1926 the teacher
Edith Hendrickson was earning $900 per year.
By 1900 the Ward family had moved to Mill plain
and Thomas B. Ward would serve as the janitor of
the school from that date until the school's closing.

At the end of the 1927 school year the town closed
the Paved Street and Mill Plain Schools, realizing
the need "for children to learn and socialize with
children their own age." The Mill Plain School was
sold and converted into a small private home. The
building still stands today by Ward's Pond, the oldest exisiing school building in the town of Branford.
