Ella Wheeler Wilcox was born hospitality and particularly enjoyed dancing. She took private lessons from dancer Jennie May Beers of Short Beach and together they performed musicals at the Bungalow always dressed in interesting costumes of their own creation. In 1884, Ella Wheeler married Robert Wilcox of Meriderr whom she had met in Milwaukee. The couple lived lbr a tin,e in New York City but in 1tj9l came to Short Beach and made it their year-round home. The Wilcoxes built a summe r home on the rocks overlooking the bay aud the cottage was named "The Bungalow." The poet was also an avid swimnrer and helped to organize races during Short Beach's Illumination Pays, a forerunner Labor Day eve of today's annual nts. The \Wilcoxes trave led widely to rhe Orienr and Europe and decorated their home with souvenirs from their rrips. The highlight of her.career was being se lected to write a poem in memory of Quee n Vic- toria upon her dearh in 1901. Though they traveled widely and spent much time away on business and pleasure Short Beach was always home . Robert \X/ilcox died suddently in Short Beach May 21, 1916 and she never realll, recovered from the loss. In 1918 Ella Wheeler Wilcox went to France ro visit men vvho had been injured in the war. For20 years, there has been a hair salon on the first floor. There have been living quarters over the store for more than a century. Next door, Samuel B. Miller had a small building where he operated an undertaking business. Samuel Ames Griswold, an undertaker from Essex, bought the business and erected a ' three-story building in 1897 that became known as the Griswold Block (978-986 Main St,). Griswold's store sold hardware, general merchandise, pot belly stoves, furniture and school supplies. Griswold also ran a funeral parlor on South Main Street. Sam Griswold was kpown throughout the " state as an antique deatei and often acquired his antiqueS from families located here for 20 years, East of the Griswold Block was originally part of the Elias Linsley farm, which extended past the former Horwitz Store and back to Hillside Avenue. The Wilford Block, 9881004 Main St., was built here in the 1890s by Charles Wilford for his butcher shop. George Birbarie ran a grocery store on the first floor, and the family lived on the second floor in the early 1900s. It was here that the first ice cream cones and sodas were sold in Branford, and where men gathered around the pot belly stove to share the day's gossip. During the early part of this century, the upstairs was rented to various men's organizations: The GAR, Knights of Pythias, The Redman and The Home Club. A fire destroyed the second floor of this block in 1938, and it was removed. Other occupants of these stores have 1924 and moved to the Wilford Block 1936. They remained here until 1963, when they moved to the Griswold Block, which they had purchased from the Griswold estate in 1951. Bernie Page of Stony Creek started his sport shop further down Main Street and moved to the Wilford Block it't 1964. Branford's first Community House T[",,." I n tami- ly was among the fbunding colonial families to settle in Brantbrd in 1644. Hundreds of people Jane Bouley throughout the country descend from Richard Harrison and his son Thomas. Among the l'ilth generation was Farrington Harrison, 1738 - 1808. Farrington was a sea captain who traded cattle and other products to the West Indies in return for rum and molasses. One of Fan"ington's vessels was captured by the British during the Revolutionary War. About 1760, Farrington built a home at the site of the curent 960 Main Street, and kept an ordinary (tavern). The house was then owtred by his son, John Harrison, l78tt * I [163, and finally his grandson, Henry G. Harrison, 183 I - 1913. Henry was a f'armer. He developed Harrison Avenue ttl provide building lots lirr a growing population due ttr the arrival of rnany new EuroPean immigrants. The Branlil'd Community Council was tirunded in 192 I to organiz.e recreational activiti"' in Branttlrcl. The Council leasci . Henry Harrison House. also known as "The Old Red House" tirr a period of five years at a cost of $500 per year'. At that time, the housc was owned by the Widow's Son Lodge of Brantbrd. The space was alsit used by the Visiting Nurse Association and the Gaylord Health Association. The first floor contained a well-equipped kitchen and a kindergarten. On the upper floor was a sewing room and game room. Many clubs and organizations in town used the space fbr classes and meetings. There was also a rest room where "everybody may feel welcome." The Brantbrd Community Council did not renew their lease on the Harison House when it expired in 192b. Polly's Tea Room was established in 1915, in the Hosley Block. and ntoved to the Old Red House in 1926. Polly served sandwiches, tea cake and sold crafis and gift cards. It was a favorite stopping place for automobile parties out for a drive. Polly's Tea Room moved to a new building at226East Main St., in 1937, and closed in 1944. Afterwards, Althea's Tea Room operated briefly at the Harrison House location. Branford Point with iti corrages and summer hotel attracted many vacitioners. The chapel was built in lgao by Isaac Brown who was the sexton for 3l years of Grace Episcopal Church in New York City. Brown was also'e yearly guest at the Branford Point Hotel and had the church built to provide a place. 5,7,' of worship for thived dudng rcsofi peiod sailors and the summer population. 'Ihe chapel was constructed by Richard Bradley of Branford for Mr. Brown. It was a 25 by 40-foot srrucrure, wood with a slate roof andtould seat 100 people. Services were held every Sunday during the summer at 4 p.m. and ministers from the Branford Center churches or other guest pastors would preach. Rev. Arthur Chase who owned a cottage in what is now Parker Memorial Park frequently gave the sermon. The chapel was dedicated in August full name wes "Mission Chapel of Grace of the Parish of Trinitv Church." Only a week after the dedication the chapel's mentor Isaac Brown died. A new home was built on the site by Mr. \fladstrom using the original foundation and some of the building materials. Saltonstall musr have attracted muclr attention on his visits to Branford with his elegant attire and horsc drawn carriage. The govcrnor's stay here rhough was not always plcasant and he had particular pro- hlems with thc citizcns of East Haven. Some of the farmers in East Haven kept tlocks of gcesc thar secmed to prefcr Gov. Saltonstall's front vard as their favoritc place to roost. The site now known as Hammer Field remained a meadow well into this century. By 1910 a dirt path appropriately named, Meadow Street, ran along this area and was lined with companies that utilized the railroad for transportation. Among those were the Malleable Iron Fittings Company (MIF), the Atlantic Wire and the S.V. Osborn Company. The busy Branford train station was Jane Bouley on the west-end of Meadow Street toward Kirkham Street. Workers from Branford Center would cut across the meadow on their way to work at the MIF and jump across the creek that ran along Hopson Avenue. At high tide they had to take the long way around. Some farming was done on the east side of the land toward the present Community House. The area was also used as a dump. A building on the edge of the meadow and seen in the photograph was the practice hall for the Branford Band. In 1915, the MIF began using the meadow to dispose of sand and debris from its molding operations. The aircraft was named for Graf Ferninand von Zeppelin and over the next l0 years I 18 zeppelins were manufactured. The "Graf Zeppelin" had 650 flights, made 144 trans-Atlantic crossings, logged one million miles, carried 18,000 passengers and millions of pieces of mail. The trip across the Atlantic took only two days and could cover 6,000 miles nonstop. The successor to the "Graf' was the "Luftshiff Zeppelin;" better known as the "Hindenburg." It made 10 successful trips to the United States during its first year of operation in 1936. The Hindenburg was the largest aircraft ever 811 feet long and built 135 feet wide. It was much like a luxury cruise ship JanetrouteY with.its sleeping quarters, state rooms, dance hall and rooms. Roundtrip tickets cost $700. dining were seen The zeppelins severai times passing their way to New York. The Graf over Branford on passed overtown on Aug. 19, 1936 and Zeppelin again in 1937. The school children were let out of class to see it go by. On that last fateful trip, the Hindenburg passed over Branford on May 6, 1937. The Hindenburg left Europe on Tuesday, May 4, 1937 and took a course to Boston, flying along the Connecticut shoreline and over Manhattan at 3 p.m. on May 6 where hundreds lined the rooftops to see it pass. However, thunderstorms delayed the landing until about 7 p.m. During the landing a fire broke out at7,,21p.m. and 34 seconds later an explosion rocked the nearby countryside. A total of 29 passengers were killed, but 36 survived by jumping from the aircraft. One of the many old- lH 'ff '?it:i Branford was operated by i Chet Prann. l,;;ffi li ll2 in 1925. Only a few Block was destroyed by fire. Customers entering Prann's store were greeted by the stout gentlemen singing songs, such as "Can She Bake a Cherry Pie" or "The Horse Marines." Customers were enticed b5, a free nibble of the huge rounds of cheese, which stood in back of the big, red coffee grinder. Brother Fred Prann filled the pastry case with fresh bread and other baked goods. There were barrels of molasses, vinegar, pickles and apples. Penny candy was a popular item for the youth of all ages. The immense ice box was filled twice a day by the local iceman and was filled with butter, lard, cream and milk. The news of the day was exchanged and the local sports scene was discussed. Chester Prann was an avid si.rpporter of all Branford sports building ar Montowese St. years later the Hosley and sponsored many teams. Chet and Alice Prann raised their four sons in Branford and all of them had successful careers in engineeering after graduating from Yale. There was considerable debate as to location, some prefierred the site at tlre corner of Montowese and Main streets but there were traflic concerns. The Board of Education approved a site at the corner of South Main and Eades streets for the new school. Two houses located on rhe Eades Street site had to be removed. One was a colonial structure built about 1712 end known as the Martin Page or Samuel Pond House but owned by the Beach fanrily for many years. Isaac P. Beach sold rlre land t<l the town for the nerv school and sold his house to Sam Criswold. Griswold paid $37 to Oscar Kelsey of Stony Creek to move the house down the street and had the dwelling convertcd into a funeral home. '[-oday this building is the Curris Funeral Home at 69 South Main St. The other house was a Greek Revivd structure owned by David Baldwin who had sold his farm on Route 139 in l9l2 and moved uptown. Tlris house was purchased by \Tilliam R. Foote, a local real estate agent and he proceeded to move the house to a lot on Vilford Avenue. Apparently Foote had not findized the purchase of the Vilford Avenue lot and the house remained half way onto the street for several days blocking the sidewdk. Unable to make the \7ilford Avenue agreement \Tilliam Foote moved the house to a lot he owned on Eades Street. Today this house still remains at 20 Eades Street opposite the school. The rear porrion of the Bddwin Housewas removed to the corner of Hopson Avenue and Prospect Strect and converted into a.single family dwelling. Branford's third high schoolwas dedicated Aug.24, 1929 on rhe F.ades Street site and today is known as Sliney School.
