During the colonial period the river was used for commercial shipping and Branford products were exported along the easrern seaboard and as far south as the'lVest Indies. It was not until the latter part of the lgth century that the Branford River was used for pleasure boating. At the turn of the cenrury Branford waters were very popular for sailboats of all sizes and annual regatras were held at the Thimble Islands. The Pine Orchard Clubwas founded in 1901 and moved to its present location in 19l6 to provide mooring for its members' yachts. Some of the finest boats in the area were moored at the club. The Johnson family of Short Beach and the Edwin Baldwin family of Branford were early pioneers in the building of naptha launches and motorized boats soon became as popular as sailboats. The Branford Yacht Club was founded in 1909 and after reorganizing in 1927 moved to the "Dock Housen at Branford Point. In 1938 the club had 223 members and moored more than 100 boats. The clubhouse sustained considerable damage during the'38 hurricane and all but one boat was saved. The Branford Yacht Club purchased land and moved to Goodsell Point in 1946 where it is still in operation. Today hundreds of pleasure boats are moored at many locations along the Branford River at both public and private docks. Branford is known as one of the yachtsman's finest ports for facilities on Long Island Sound. Alden M. Young was born l8l3 in Hadley. N.Y., and settled in Vaterbury As a young man he began his business' career in the emerging utilities industry. Ultimately he would have an interest in many electric, gas, telephone and trolley companies in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York. A.M. Young and his wife Ellen Shepardson purchased property in 1893 on the Pine Orchard shore at Cresecent Bluff and built a summer home which they called "The Anchorage." The estate was built by conrractor Richard Bradley of Branford and contained 2l tooms, l0 baths, l0 fireplaces and had a lovely- summer pavilion. The grounds were beautifully landscaped and with their-four daughters, thi Youngs enjoyed many summers at the pine Or- chard shore. Through his varied interests A.M. Young made many contributions to the development of the community. He owned the company which brought electric, water and rrolley service to Branford. At Pine Orchard he built seawalls, maintained Young's Pond and built the clubhouse for the use of Pine Orchard's summer residents. Originally standing on the grounds of the golf course, the clubhouse was moved to its present loca- tion in l9lJ. The Youngs made Pine Orchard their year-round home in 1899. A.M. Young died in lgll and after the death of Mrs. Young in 1938, the home was maintained by members of the family. "The Anchorage" was rorn down in 1948 and the property absorbed by adjacent land owners.
